Include a wood burner in your garden room design

Why not include a wood burner in your garden room design

Many readers have asked us about the possibility of adding a wood burner to their garden room. We were, therefore, pleased to hear from Vesta Stoves who have a range of stoves suitable for garden room installation. In this article, they tell us what’s involved in including a wood burning stove into a garden room design.

At Vesta we’re proud to be part of a resurgence in embracing traditional means of keeping a property warm. Customers are becoming increasingly savvy and looking for alternatives to traditional gas and oil fired burners. As time goes on more people are realising that environmentally friendly solutions can look great and still save them money. The video below shows a Vesta V2 stove installed in a summerhouse

Log burning Stove installed in Log Cabin Summerhouse

Rather than simply copying the styles of older burners, our stoves are contemporary looking without moving too far away from the romantic idea of logs in a fire. A clear window to an inviting flame that warms and creates a centrepiece for a room.

In the past year, we’ve experienced a noticeable increase in requests for stoves to be installed in garden rooms, summer houses and log cabins. Because of longer Summers, customers in the UK are staying home and enjoying their own gardens from their very own miniature holiday homes. Vesta wood burning stoves are favoured for these cosy spaces due to their short flue requirement of only a metre and a half, compared to many other stove manufacturers requiring up to four metres or more. Similarly, gas feeds can be costly to install and difficult to maintain, whereas a wood burner is an ideal compromise that fits the aesthetic perfectly.

Any of the Vesta range are suitable for garden rooms but our most requested stove for log cabins and garden rooms is the Vesta V2. This is mainly due to its small kilowatt (heat energy) output but also the ability to load a 30cm log. This means that a standard stock log can be added to the stove right away instead of having to re-cut the wood into small pieces. The V2 stove (so named because of its 2kW output) was also recently featured on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, as well as pictured on the front cover of the book following the series.

For practical reasons, we have developed custom heat shields to allow a stove to be installed closer to a wall; saving on valuable floor space. We also employ self-cleaning glass in each stove that we build, ensuring every customer has a wide clear view of the beautiful flame that only a stove can produce. Much more romantic to snuggle up to than an oil filled radiator!

Stove Installed in Garden Room

Each one of our stoves is hand built and produced in our workshop in Lancashire. Every stove is unique with its own tale to tell, and we can cater for different build sizes and custom requirements depending on where the stove is to be installed. One of the latest designs to come out of our workshop is the Crantock. A hark back to a more rustic feel (but with contemporary sensibilities) the Crantock can warm a room but also boil a kettle or cook a treat or two, thanks to its large flat stove top.

Our wood burning stoves can be found all around the country in homes, offices, summer houses, shepherd huts, garden studios, converted barns and even narrow boats! We have a range and a colour available to suit every scenario, with a lifetime warranty if installed by one of our engineers. For a set fee, our engineers will cover the length and breadth of the United Kingdom too. Making sure you can keep warm, bring a unique look and feel to your property without breaking the bank, and reduce your impact on the environment all at the same time.

Keeping your bell tent warm with the bushmaster camping stove

Bell Tent camping – The Bushmaster Camp Stove

We are all well aware that camping is one of the UK’s biggest forms of outdoor pursuit. Nothing quite compares to a perfect sunny camping trip in the rolling hills of the lake district or a cornish seaside break. Sounds great! Right? Well it would be if it wasn’t for the British weather.

The poor weather conditions amongst and loss of major home comforts has seen the increase of glamping in Yurts, EcoPods, Bell tents and all manner of upmarket off the grid escapes.

Still, when it comes down to it the weather still plays a major part in making a glamping trip comfortable.

Bushmaster camp stove – Bringing out the best in camping.

Portable stoves such as the Bushmaster camping stove (right) and to some extent the Frontier stove and Traveller stove have offered the glamping fraternity the opportunity to bring many of homes comforts and most importantly the romance of a fire safely into your camping trip.

The design of the Bushmaster is very different to the design of say many other woodburning stoves as there are very different requirements in both circumstances.

Home multi fuel stoves such as the Vesta V4MF is designed to retain heat for long periods of time and run efficiently on a 4 or more meter flue system. The major difference with the Bushmaster camp stove is its designed to rapidly heat up and cool down allowing for quick cook times as well as cool down times when you’re ready to pack up and move on. It is also lightweight, made from a thinner material so that the hotplate reaches higher temperatures. However, the differences stop here. The Bushmaster contains all the technology tried and tested in our range of stoves. An air wash helps maintain a perfect view of the flames and a fully lined firebox not only ensures the Bushmaster has a long life but gives burn efficiencies of up to 85%.

Wood burning stove fitted in a Barbados Mini log cabin

We recently fitted a wood burning stove for a Barbados Mini log cabin. The Barbados Mini is a double glazed summerhouse, perfect for a garden getaway. With it only being 2.5m to the ridge height it does not require planning permission under normal circumstances. With a Vesta Stoves wood burning stove installed it’s perfect for a mini holiday home in your garden.

As you can see from the final picture there was a spot of rain towards the end. So we had to shut the doors on the summerhouse and you could really feel the heat from the wood burner, which was made even cosier with the double glazing. For the cabin stove install we used the Vesta V2, this is mainly due to its small kilowatt (heat energy) output. We have a specific garden room log cabin kit on sale in our shop too.

Our wood burning stoves can be found all around the country and we have a range and a colour available to suit every home, summerhouse and log cabin. Each stove comes with a lifetime warranty if installed by one of our engineers too.

If you’re looking for the right type of wood burner for your summerhouse please get in touch on 01704 821095 or contact us.

Woodburner and multifuel stove heating for a narrowboat

canalboat-01Here at Vesta Stoves HQ we often get unique requests for stove and woodburner installations. Occasionally our engineers are called onto narrowboats, canal boats and canal barges. As wood burning stoves are a romantic, reliable and economical way of keeping a boat warm and cosy on cold British evenings.

Recently we had such a request and it was a really interesting installation for our engineers. We had to create custom heat shielding and a metal hearth to maintain a safe environment, without detracting from the aesthetics of the boat. Because of the limited space the Vesta engineers installed a fully insulated custom shaped flue, ensuring that the flue gases passed safely through the wooden roof. Along with saving money by using less fuel throughout the year.

canalboat-02On the roof of the boat itself a custom chimney was installed, removable when required (in case you have any tricky branches to go under!) Due to the size of the narrowboat, our 2KW Vesta V2 woodburning stove was more than enough for the task. In these cases we have to ensure that the heat output is matched to the cabin size. The clean lines and slim design of the Vesta fit in perfectly with the surroundings of the boat. Wood burners have been in use on narrowboats and canal boats since the industrial revolution. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t take advantage of modern conveniences and contemporary styling though!

If you’re looking a wood burning stove for your own narrowboat or canal barge. Our range of woodburners are available in a variety of colours to fit any styles or surroundings.

A woodburning stove installation for a summerhouse / log cabin

A woodburning stove installed in a garden room in Chester

Warm and inviting, the V2 looks right at home!

Recently the Vesta Stoves team had another interesting summerhouse installation. This time one of our Vesta V2 woodburning stoves was installed in a wonderful Dunster House cabin situated on the outskirts of Chester. Over six hours our stove engineers did some fine work and by the end of the day the wood burner stove was up and running. The Vesta V2 woodburning stove (with log store unit) was selected due to its low KW output, ideal for a small garden room or summerhouse.

The Dunster House cabin is 4 years old and had been used previously just to store garden furniture. Our customers were looking for a new lease of life for the cabin and the Vesta V2 fitted the bill perfectly and transformed the cabin completely. The owner of the summerhouse opted for Vesta engineers to install the stove so he could take advantage of our lifetime warranty. Rather than the three year warranty with our standard Vesta Stove DIY pack.

Because of the nature of the installation the stove engineers surveyed the site to ensure the stove would have optimal and safe placement. With an OK from the customer on their choice of stove location, within a few hours the custom heatshield was installed as well as watertight flashing and a twin wall flue kit. Even in such a small area we have to ensure that the woodburner has sufficient ventilation.

A warm and inviting summerhouse

You can feel the heat from there too!

After commissioning the stove (which included the installation of a free carbon monoxide detector) the Vesta engineers stayed behind to give a full tutorial and a demonstration on how to use it correctly.

The demo included how to light and manage the stove, as well as how to care for the burner and log store long-term. We left a very happy (and snug) customer to enjoy his summerhouse cabin for years to come with a Vesta Stoves woodburner.

Looking for a woodburning stove for your own summerhouse?

The Vesta engineers specialise in stove installation for log cabins and summerhouses and we cover the whole of the United Kingdom. We have a range of woodburning and multifuel stoves designed for use in summerhouses, log cabins and garden rooms where the flue system has to be kept as short as possible.

Our stove DIY kits come with the complete system to enable the stove to be installed with a working DIY understanding. With everything you need to comply with all current building regulations. Although if you’re not confident in installing the stove, our professional installers and engineers are on hand to answer your technical queries or carry out the installation for a fixed fee.

An independent Vesta stove review from a happy customer

We recently received an email at Vesta HQ from a very happy customer. We’re always grateful to receive this kind of independent review because it’s great to know our wood burning stoves can have such a dramatic effect on a customer’s home.

Before his initial order the customer telephoned and explained that his neighbour had a Vesta V4 woodburning stove installed in his home. During a visit over the Christmas cold snap, he noticed that his neighbour’s home was lovely and warm, whereas his own house was quite cold. Although he wasn’t a stranger to the world of woodburners, as he’d already had two stoves previously, but they were just not performing as they should. After ordering and installing a Vesta V4 the following is the email that we received:

Following my recent order of my Vesta V4 I feel I should put a quick email together to let you know that I am thoroughly pleased with it! It all started with my neighbour ordering one about 2 years ago, he often boasts about his lounge being toasty and sitting there in his shorts whilst the thermometer is commanding sub zero temperatures!

I have tried various stoves to heat the lounge, kitchen and the hallway (I am open plan) whilst my lounge is 44 cubic meters the whole area it has to heat is considerably more! And it does! I find initial burn when lighting of an evening requires a nice hot burn around 450 degrees on the thermometer for about half an hour then the heat is in the chimney and refuelling is easy, the air wash is excellent and the view of the fire is amazing this also contributes to heat transference into the room quite considerably.

The stove was well packaged upon arrival and secured to a pallet and arrived pre 09:00 as promised on the courier, a tip to the driver ensured a lift over the threshold and into the lounge upon delivery. I would recommend this stove as it claims a 4.5kw output ensures no need for an airbrick (constant source of external airflow) under the current laws, however it feels like it’s outputting a whole lot more! I can see how you achieve a high efficiency with this stove it is remarkable and made in this country to boot.

So if anyone contemplating purchasing a Vesta I can only comment on my experience which is with the v4 which has been remarkable so if this is anything to go by then I expect the rest of the range will not disappoint

If you have any photos, stories or reviews on your Vesta Stove experience please do get in touch. We’re always happy to hear from you.
